Bryce Canyon

Sun February 27, 2011

With a title like that, you might think there would be photos of Bryce Canyon in this blog post.

This holiday has been planned for a veeeerrrrryyyy long time.  So 24hrs later, we still cannot work out, how on earth we did  not realise we would be visiting Bryce Canyon in the SNOW!  As we were driving here yesterday the snow on the tops of the mountains became snow at the base of the mountains, and then became snow… um… right beside the car.  Oh hello – snow as far as the eye can see.  As we reached Bryce Canyon City (please note this is a very liberal use of the word city – i.e. 4 buildings), the snow was falling heavily around us.  I may have said, “I’m scared” a few times.  A mother who doesn’t like to concern her children?

Anyway, this is all part of the adventure, so here we are in sunny Bryce Canyon.  Can we see the canyon through the snow?  No.  Is anything open? No – closed for the winter.   Are the kids LOVING this like crazy? Yes

There is one lodge open and it sells petrol, groceries, gloves, ski hire, knick knacks and has a diner attached.  The diner offers all sorts of steak and chips.  Lucky I’m a chip eating vegetarian :)  The kids have spent hours trawling through the knick knacks and so far we have a pair of ski goggles, magnetic dolls house, and 4 stuffed kitten toys.

All of that aside, we have never seen real snow falling from the sky.  Let alone snow falling from the sky for 24hrs straight.  So it is a fantastic experience.

Across the road from our hotel.

Three very happy little munchkins.

We took a very slow drive up the snow-covered road to see if Bryce Canyon was visible at all.  No.

Snow man time.  Or, a carefully constructed mound of snow with a face and arms :)

Las Vegas

Thu February 24, 2011

I had every intention of blogging a photo a day of our travels.  What was I thinking?!  Particularly in Vegas.  There is just so much to do.  The days have been full of photography goodness at WPPI, the nights have been very late – keeping the kids up to enjoy Vegas at night.    WPPI is amazing.  So many awesome photographers speaking around the clock — you are spoilt for choice on who to see.  Some of my favourites have been Jerry Ghionis, Sue Bryce, Jesh de Rox, and Sarah Petty.

Jesh de Rox held his WPPI party in a penthouse suite at the Palms.  Oh. my. god.  I have never experienced such a view.  All my photog buddies were there.  It was such a beautiful night — moving as always in Jesh’s space :)

One of the highlights of this week has been the sunrise concert where Jesh and  other brilliant musicians and singers serenaded a group of photographers.  We all met at MGM at 5am and piled into buses, then drove out to the desert to huddle under blankets and listen to some great music.

Setting up.

Jesh de Rox.

We shared the camera around.  Me and my lovely friends.

Imi having some chill out time.

There is so much about Vegas I love.  The shopping, and the late shopping hours.  To think you can go to dinner, and then do some shopping afterwards — every night of the week!  The duelling piano bars are my favourite.  Two pianists/singers sit opposite each other in the bar, playing brilliant song after brilliant song.  Kristen and I had such a blast singing along last night.  The casinos are nothing short of spectacular.  And then on the flipside, this is the local petrol station, complete with poker machines :)  We are off to Freemont St tonight and Red Rock Canyon tomorrow. x

Out of the Office

Sat February 19, 2011

Who knew that taking five people half-way across the world would take soooo much organising?  Wow.  I’m exhausted, but we have finally arrived at the morning we are due to fly out!

We are at WPPI in Vegas, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon, Disneyland and LA, and New York.  If you have any fave spots or must-sees, please send them through.

This will be my last client post for a while.  I will be blogging some photos from the holiday along the way, so if you to stop back here to see what we’ve seen, thank you :)

Photo session and photography workshop emails will be answered as promptly as I can while travelling.  Normal business resumes March 21st.  xo

Still Excited

Tue February 15, 2011

Only four more sleeps until our U.S. adventure.  And it’s nearly bedtime now, so that sort of makes it 3 more sleeps.  So, we are beside ourselves.

There is so much I am looking forward to about this trip, but mostly it’s the downtime.  I am not someone who relaxes easily — I don’t sit down for a minute.  I eat my meals standing, don’t watch TV and even reading one book is a challenge — to counter-balance the fidgeting I am reading at least 10 books at any one time.  And when I conjure up all the things that may happen on this holiday, I get most excited about the hanging around.  The walking slowly.  The cuddling.  The long discussions over meals about the things we’ve seen or might see.

Sunday is my birthday, and we wake up in Vegas. The five of us plan to drive out to the desert early and watch the sunrise.   OMG!  Yes, excited.

And this beautiful family?  So easy – such gentle parents with scrummy babes.

End of the Holidays

Fri February 4, 2011

We took the kids to the beach late yesterday for the last day of the school holidays.  While they hit the water, I buried my feet in the sand and there I stayed for the entire time — nursing my sunnies, 50mm and random shell deliveries from Imi.  Now I’m not sure if this is an exercise in art or laziness, however all these photos were taken from the exact same spot.  I did not move until we left for home :)
